The World of 2098
Between today and 2098. A quick overview
Short The world is generally a better place.
Throughout the 21st century things continued to trend in a similar fashion. Emerging economies continued to grow at an extreme rate. The Superpowers of old did not fade so much as become mentors to the new, attempting to keep afloat on the growth of these new nations. Most The EU continued to become more interdependent. Almost becoming a united nation of nations. Economic growth never irreparably damaged the environment, and humans are the least damaging to the environment since the industrial revolution. There are colonies both on Luna and on Mars, and they are on the way to becoming their own states.
The United States was beginning the aptly named religiosity war. The rise of the internet networked and strengthened the non traditional religious minorities. The resulting pressures eventually exploded into a campaign for equal rights. Many viewed this as extreme and coined the demonstrators anti-Christian and the amorality police. The protestant fundamentalists right believing that they had the full backing of the US Christian population retaliated. This event caused such a backlash some believe this is the reason for the decline in Christian power that continued until present times. Christianity remains as the largest religious group in the US, but it no longer has the power and influence that it once had. Humility has done much for the religion. Most of the people who left the religion or were branded as NTC, nontraditional Christians, were the crazies and the people who were in it for the money. No longer were they able to make a killing or take advantage of the Christian good name and so they left or were kicked out. The resulting power gap left in communities large and small were filled in by other religious and non religious rights groups. The Congregation, a neutral organization attempting to create a similar environment to what the community churches provided, spread across the US. Much like the Unitarian church all religions were welcomed. It was embraced, especially in small communities where a there were not enough people of a specific religion to justify a church, mosque, temple, or other religious community. Today The Congregation is larger than any single protestant denomination was at its prime with members equal to roughly on third of the people living in the US.
At this same time from the perspective of the People of the US, Politics took a turn for the worst. Positions continued to use whatever tactics that would get them the most votes, and at this time when religious divisions were high positions would say whatever they could to get the largest piece of the religious pie. This inflamed the fervor of fundamentalists and moderates alike. This eventually led to the breakdown of the two party system. As politicians attempted to get in good with many factions that were adverse to each other they were no longer able to garner more than 30% of the popular vote in this way. This led to the rise of many candidates in presidential, house and Senate races, and even further polarization of the state legislative and executive branches. Without party support from the Federal level even the local democrats and republicans were unable to sustain. With the loss of easy answers many Americans stopped voting all together. In this way each vote became that more important. Independent candidates realized the importance of increasing poll rates so that their voters would vote. The voting system was overhauled to make the process simpler and more efficient. Even after all of this voters still had lost respect for the current democratic system of the US. This caused extreme volatility in the platforms of elected officials. Politicians stopped writing bills they knew would be repealed in 2 years. Eventually the system was on the verge of collapse. Every person involved in the political system knew that eventually there would be an election that was so crazy the elected officials would actually cause anarchy, but no one knew how to fix the system. Then on 2048 James David Taylor was elected into the presidency. His platform, vote reform. He won an almost unanimous victory with 75,000 of the popular vote. Over the next four years he did not mention a single word of vote reform, for fear of the project being killed by the public as unfeasible or wrong. Then in the year of his re-election race they instituted bill that reformed not only voting, but tax as well. The polls were open for a week 12 hours a day, and real-time polls counts were available. A new nonvoting tax was initiated. The actual tax is to complicated to explain here, but it worked. An unprecedented 80% of the populace came out to vote. President Taylor lost. But his system lives on today and was almost immediately adopted by state and local governments. This caused waved of changes to the election systems. Direct to voter ads were eliminated to reduce the cost of running an election to allow for more candidates to run. Information dissemination more dependent on the voter, and because of the external reward system voter awareness rose to an all time high. There were still flaws, such as the sensationalism of mass media and the influence of corporate views over voter views was still not balanced. The system is not perfect and many would still say that it is broken, but it works.
No war between two developed countries have broken out since World War II. Due to problems at home the US lost focus on the Middle East. Al Qaeda attacks happened from time to time, but they were limited in damage. US responses were limited to host country sanctioned strikes on Al Qaeda hideouts. The US remained a member of the international community, but lost clout in the first half of the 21st century because of the appearance of instability. The regained most of what they lost and are again one of the top members of the UN along with China, India, Norway, (the current representative member for the EU), Russia and Brazil.
China, India, and Brazil continued to be the three fastest growing economies in the world for the beginning of the 21st century. With the US’s loss of power they were able to branch out to become strong members of the international community. China and Brazil became the protectors and superpowers of their regions, China of southeast Asia, and Brazil of South America. The regions as a whole became more developed, but also more uniform. It was not a voluntary arrangement. Currently China and Brazil have a real economic power similar to the US in the mid 21st century.
The setting is PL 7ish. not all PL 7 things are available, and maybe some PL 8 prototypes exist. Space travel is common, but inter-system travel is prohibitively expensive for non Governmental or corporate entities. There is no public knowledge of colonies in other systems. As the Campaign title insinuates, Time Travel, or TT, is possible.
Feel like something’s missing. Let me know we can work out the details together.
